Fraud is not common when shipping a car, but it can happen. Given the value of your vehicle, it is a good idea to take a few small steps to protect your vehicle.
To be sure the correct auto hauler is picking up your car, ask to see the credentials of the driver picking up your vehicle. Credentials can include a bill of lading, the driver’s license, or a copy of their Operating Authority from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA ). You should also record the credentials. One easy way is to take a quick photo with a camera or a smart phone.
Please note: The company name for the auto hauler is frequently different from that of the auto transport company with which you scheduled your car shipping. See the post on How the Auto Transport Industry Works for details as to why.
If driver refuses to provide the requested information for any reason, your car should not be given to the auto hauler. As an added measure of security, you can also record their license plate number.
