Who Insures My Car When Shipping It?

03/27/2012

The car shipping company should insure your vehicle during auto transport. To get and maintain a license with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration , car shipping companies are required to be insured. However, just as some individuals let their car insurance lapse, some car shipping companies do the same.

Since your car is probably one of your most valuable assets, it is worth a little extra effort to ensure your car shipping company’s insurance is current. Request a copy of their current insurance policy. Verbal assurances are not enough. You want a copy of the actual policy.

Once your receive a copy, review it or contact their insurance company to be sure it is current. Next, check whether their insurance is primary or secondary to your car insurance. Is there a deductible? If so, how large? While insurance policies often include a deductible, the deductible will need to come out of the car shipping company’s pocket. So, the higher the deductible, the greater the risk that you will not get fully reimbursed if something happens to your vehicle.

Your personal car insurance policy may also provide coverage while your car is in transit. Check with your insurance provider for the specifics around car shipping.

Finally, personal belongings are unlikely to be covered if damaged or stolen. So, it is best to remove them from your vehicle before shipping it. See the post about including personal belongings when shipping a car for more details.
